Parting the Sea

Monday, June 20th, 2011   What We Learned

This week our story is about Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt. The Israelites had been in slavery and were waiting for God to send someone that would lead them to freedom. They waited and prayed for years for God to send this person. Finally, Moses arrived and was the one God had chosen to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.

I’m sure the Israelites were excited that finally they were no longer slaves, that they were finally free! As they were leaving Egypt, Pharaoh suddenly changed his mind. He sent all his soldiers after them. I can’t imagine the fear the people had when they saw this army chasing after them. They started the day off with excitement because they were finally free, and now they feared for their life. I’m sure they thought it was too good to be true.

We often have that attitude today. I can’t tell you how many times I have used that statement. And a lot of times that statement is true. But with Christ, it’s that simple. He loves us, he died for us, and all we have to do is believe. It’s that simple. It’s “too good to be true,” but it is true. The Israelites thought they were a goner, but right before the army reached them, God did something amazing.

The Israelites were trapped. They couldn’t go anywhere. They were right by the Red Sea, and because they couldn’t walk across the water, they were stuck. But God didn’t give up on his people. He parted the sea. He parted the sea so the people could walk right through. The Israelites walked on dry land to the other side. Just as the army followed, the sea came back together and drowned the entire Egyptian army.

Sometimes having faith in something so simple is hard for us. We expect something very complicated, but that’s not how God works. He just simply loves us. God can do the impossible, no strings attached. He did it for the Israelites, and he does it for us today. Check out this story this week with your kids. It comes from Exodus 14.

Tough Times

Monday, June 13th, 2011   What We Learned

We all go through tough times. Sometimes those tough times can even shake our faith. But we need to remember that through the good times and the bad, we can stand firm because of Jesus. We need to make sure our examples show our kids that we can overcome and have confidence that God is with us no matter what.

Our story this week is about Joseph, who was sold to be a slave by his brothers. He had tough moments where he probably felt all alone, but he kept his faith through all of it. God had a plan for Joseph and was preparing him for something big. God did the impossible with Joseph. He took Joseph, who was a slave, and made him into a ruler in Egypt.

God can also do the impossible in our lives. Maybe you even have a story to share with your kids. Take time to share this story with them. If you want to check out this Bible account, it comes from Genesis 37, 39 and 41.

Keep the Faith

Monday, June 6th, 2011   What We Learned

This week we are talking about Abraham’s faith. Abraham was asked to sacrifice his son. That’s right – sacrifice his son. As in “take his son’s life.” God has asked me to do things that have made me uncomfortable or may have caused me to be embarrassed, but never has he asked me of such a sacrifice as giving up my child.

I often wonder what was going through Abraham’s head when he was being told by God what he wanted him to do. We learn from the Bible story that Abraham agrees to give up his son. God doesn’t allow Abraham to actually sacrifice his son but instead blesses him because of his faith. We may think that what God asked of Abraham was a lot, and it was. But we need to remember the sacrifice that God made for us. He did allow his son to die for us.

Abraham’s faith was strong, and he wasn’t going to back down no matter what. He trusted God to keep his promises, and even though his request didn’t make sense, he was going to trust in him anyway. God blessed Abraham when Abraham kept his faith.

How can we show our kids that powerful faith? What about if we lose our job, lose someone close to us, or have a hurt so deep that it affects our life? Our kids mirror our actions. How do we handle these situations? Do we trust God even when things don’t make sense? Or is our faith put in a corner until things are easy again. Abraham had a huge difficult task before him, but he was willingly ready to do whatever God asked of him. If we had faith like that, can you imagine what God could do?

Talk to your kids about this story. Ask them what kind of faith they have. We may learn something from them this week.

See you Sunday!

Faith

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011   What We Learned

This month we will be focusing on Faith. I’ve heard faith described in so many different ways. Faith has been compared to wind – you can’t see it, but you can feel it. But you can’t base faith on feelings. Your feelings and emotions are ever changing and can be almost like a roll a coaster. They’re always up and down. So instead of trying to figure out exactly what faith means by ourselves, why not check out what God says about it? This is our memory verse for the month of June:

“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do no see.” Hebrews 11:1

The amazing thing about being a Christ follower is trusting in what we can’t see through what we can see. I mean, look around. If you look at nature, how we are created, there has to be someone who did that. I even grew more in my faith when my daughter was born, not because of a feeling but because when I looked at her tiny toes and tiny hands, I just knew that only a Creator could have figured out how to design something so cute.

So make sure you take time this week to tell your kids about your faith. Our kids have negative views about faith every day that comes from all directions. We need to make sure our opinion on faith counts above all else. So talk to them, pray with them, read the Bible with them, and have faith that God will prepare their hearts when they’re ready.

See you Sunday!
