That’s Not Fair

Thursday, July 29th, 2010   What We Learned

At an early age, we catch on pretty quickly that life isn’t fair. As an adult, we become even more aware that those circumstances don’t change.

The Bible has plenty of examples of life not being fair. This week, we’ll be teaching the kids about about Jacob’s story. Jacob worked seven years for Rachel’s father in return for her hand in marriage, only to learn that her father had tricked him and instead Jacob married her sister, Leah. Then Jacob had to work an additional seven years to have Rachel for his wife.

Life was not fair for Jacob. Our kids won’t have to worry about being tricked into marrying the wrong person, but they will go through life with unfair outcomes. We want to remind them this Sunday that while life may not be fair, sometimes that isn’t a bad thing. It helps us grow, it keeps us humble, and it teaches us that we are not in control. Thankfully, Jesus didn’t say, “This isn’t fair” from the cross. He had every right to be angry, to leave us in our sinful ways, and to not die for us. This should be our motivation to never give up even when times are tough.

Our memory verse for this week emphasizes that point:

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Galatians 6:9

See you Sunday!
